Some links for the weekend…
- A sunburn (not yours, natch) can be fun with the: Sundown “Human Piano”
- Fortunately, I AM a morning person. For those that aren’t, there’s this hilarious commercial (I think this is how S sees me)
- If you still have warm & fuzzies about Bob Saget from Full House, you need to see him in a different light – Chilling with Bob Saget rap video
- Last but not least, a funny ad that explains why Marilyn Monroe’s skirt blew up (this is for you, Sante)
If I hear this one more time….Fai il tifo per….? (Who are you rooting for?)
This weekend, arguably one of the most interesting games of all the World Cup in Germany, is the Italy vs. the United States game this Saturday evening. Don’t know anything about the teams? Check them out here: Italy and USA. There is a lot of excitement here in Italy, and of course with so much attention, there’s bound to be some radical comments and viewpoints with everyone getting excited.
An American player started it all with: “We’re here for a war.”
And of course, an Italian player replied: “We’re going to win for our troops in Nasiriyah.”
Very confusing…I thought the war was in Iraq and they are allies? Seriously, this is the last place you need to start talking about that – sure, dedicate your efforts and (hopefully) wins to the troops, but keep the Olympic-games-we’re-all-here-for-a-good-time feeling, no?
Of course several PR exchanges smoothed it over after that, but you know tension is high. Part of me wants the USA to win because I can’t wait to hear the outrage and disbelief afterward. But it’s not likely. In fact, the USA is 0-5 against Italy, and odds are stacked high against the US team.
S’s favorite player, and he’s a cutie if I do say so myself, is Francesco Totti, who plays for Rome. He’s dumb as a sack of rocks – which is why he has his own set of books “Barzellette su Totti” which are basically copies of those “dumb blonde” or “dumb ___” jokes, but the boy’s heart beats for Rome and they love him for it. He was injured earlier, so hopefully his game is back in top form.
If you’re not that interested in the game, that’s understandable. I played soccer for 8 years myself and I like watching a team when I have some interest in them, and of course, live is best.
But just to leave you with something to do – La Repubblica always seems to have some “eye candy” to entertain visitors to the website – this time it’s Bikinis of the World Cup. Very classy. I saw a few Statue of Libertys in there.
Go blue. Go red white and blue.

O MY GOSH – that Marilyn Monroe pic is HILARIOUS! Love it.
i think the war comment was stupid on both sides but Sara has more of the actual quote which makes things a bit different. Im glad to know media worldwide sensationalizes things (and its not just the US).
enjoy your blog!

Stacy, thanks for the comment! I know what the “real” story was, I just thought it was very convenient how the media cuts/pastes conversations to make them sell newspapers. The quotes I included were headlines in some cases I saw, and some of the articles didn’t even include the backstory! :P :)

I sadly think your right, the US reall doesn’t have a chance against lovely Totti and the boys in blue. But it’ll be fun to watch anyway!

What a game. I cannot wait until Thursday. I wish I was in NYC, at least Americans there have the soccer fever. All everyone wants to talk about here is the latest box office numbers and which movies aren’t tracking. :(
