This morning when I walked the short distance from my house to the underground station and big, wet, white flakes landed on me and quickly melted.
The first snow of the year!
The flakes didn’t last long, since things have been so warm lately.
My forecast plugin for Firefox says that today in Milan it will be “colder, cloudy, then snow” which has been the prediction for the past week or so. Yet tomorrow the temperature starts creeping back up to 9 degrees Celsius by the weekend.
It seems that I, who often lament about the not-optimal weather in Milan, wants it to get cold! For a while it was amusing but now it’s just confusing. Yesterday the coffee machine at work was broken so I walked to the bar on the corner (infinitely better coffee) in only a light zip-up hoodie.
But I do want it to get cold. I know that getting colder is the only way we’re sure it will then get hotter. Every day that it stays warm reminds me that we still have a whole season of cold ahead of us.
Many people are starting to compare this year to 2003, where a mild winter lead to an insanely hot summer. That happened to be the summer I moved to Italy. It wasn’t much fun, but at least now I have an air-conditioned office to run to during the summer months.
Does anyone else want winter to behave? Are we doomed for a hot summer? Is this global warming or just an El Nino year?

I love your second shot. Wow. The tree has such interesting form, and then the architecture in the background…. Very nice.
— Vicki, hoping that this too-warm winter is an anomaly rather than part of a scary trend…..

I was excited to see the snow this morning!
God..I hope we don’t have another summer like the one in 2003. That was pure HELL! Weeks of 40 degree weather with no break!
I was taking several cold showers a day and as soon as I got out i was hot and sweaty again. It was disgusting. Remember all the people that died?
If the weather now has anything to do with next summer..than I hope it stays cold now!

Me too, I love that 2nd shot! Like dark gossamer….
The cold I don’t mind. I just want it to NOT snow tonight so that dinner reservations won’t be cancelled!

Beautiful shot with the tree, very artistic.
Don’t remind me of summer 2003. I had just started a new job on the 4th floor (so 5th fl. American) of an ancient palazzo, and the elevator was broke pretty much the entire summer. I just have flashbacks of my face dripping for like 10 minutes after I’d get into the office, every time. Insanity. But the red wines from that year came out awesome!!

Can you believe this picture was taken December 23? It was quite hot.
Vicki – I have lots of relatives in Michigan…!
Autumn, Milan in a hot summer…is not fun. At least this time I won’t be alone like I was then!
Rowena, dove si mangia bene da te? I hope you share.
Shelley…I guess good wine is a trade-off, but not much! :)

Just realized you’re in Milan. We went for a weekend trip two weekends ago. Loved it!
