Last year on this day, there was no Earth Day post. Instead, I was busy migrating my site to this domain, msadventuresinitaly.com.
Some posts and sites I noticed yesterday for Earth Day! Scroll down to see who won the comment giveaway!
- Intelligent Travel’s Earth Day Every Day post
- National Geographic has a Green Guide magazine and blog and I recently wrote a Green Guide to Milan for The Traveler’s Notebook
- The Guardian talks about “The Slow Way to Go” and the “Citta Slow” movement gaining speed in the UK
- I’ll remind you that Blog Action Day was about the Environment and I posted about Eataly and some other ways to go greener
- From the comments, Dr. Shock reminded me about a video I’d seen – The Story of Stuff which is 20 minutes well-spent
Earth Day Mini Giveaway
It’s been a while since I’ve given away something free to readers, and luckily for you, that starts to bother me. A bit like an itch I need to scratch. I’ve got two other giveaways in the pipeline but they’re not quite ready yet.
So today, I’m going to make it easy for you:
What’s something you’re doing for Earth Day this year? One tip you’re doing or would like to try for Earth day : recycling, lowering your carbon footprint, energy saving, fighting global warming, cleaning up the environment, etc.
Or give us a website or blog to check out with this info!
I’ll pick a comment at random and I’ll send you a choice of:
- Ebooks: Give you a one-on-one tutorial about ebooks and buy you your first ebook! (up to USD$15 in value)
- Re-usable Shopper Bag: I have an exclusive cute cotton shopper bag with the Girl Geek Dinners Italia color logo (tell me that’s not cute!) and you won’t find it anywhere!
The contest is closed. Congratulations to our winner – Comment #8, Novelist! A Cute Shopper bag! Send me your address via email!

I have a green bag, so I’m going to go for the E-book!
In the past I helped clean the beach in Santa Monica. Here I am going to recycle as much as possible. I use cloth napkins instead of paper. One, we save some trees, two they can make a regular old dinner for one seem nice and festive.
I no longer have a car, so I think that helps. Using my feet is easy on the enviroment.
Joanne at frutto della passione says
We are a one car family (I travel exclusively by public transport) and recently upgraded all appliances to reduce energy consumption. My eight year old is responsible for making sure nothing is left on *stand-by* before he goes to bed and we recycle religiously.
*bag* for me please – we use them when we go shopping and you can’t have too many!

We are trying to compleatly stop using disposable shopping bags, so a *bag* would help out a lot!
Shanna says
1) Plant some trees in my backyard.
2) Ride my bike to work.
3) Celebrate my birthday!
Bag, please.

I’ve started getting off my lazy butt and walking everywhere I can! Also recycling and re-using shopping bags, but the walking is a new development. :) And to relax after I get back from walks, I’d love a new book to read!

What a cool contest! I love the idea of that bag!
My Earth Day efforts started in January when I took a job with a super environmentally aware company. So this month we’re concentrating on driving a lot less to save gas and money. We’re also turning off all of the lights as often as we can and trying to use natural light a little more.

I walk whenever possible to avoid putting further emissions into the ozone.
I recycle.
I have converted all of my regular lightbulbs to the eco-friendly versions.
Bag, please (I would love a reusable bag to help keep our environment safe). :)

You guys have a good chance of winning ;)

I’m fanatical about recycling (I even recycle the tiny pieces of paper from sales tags on clothing!), I try to buy as much in the way of organic/locally grown/sourced foods as I can, I only use cloth bags when I go shopping (including two very fashionable “Girl Geek Dinners Italia” bags I got at the dinner in February!!), I replace all burnt-out bulbs in my house with CF bulbs, I use a travel coffee mug when I go to the cafe, I bring my lunch to work in an insulated (reusable) bag, I use cloth napkins 100% of the time (at home and in my lunch bag), I now buy only recycled paper products (toilet paper, tissues, paper towels), I work at home two days a week to help cut down on driving… That’s all I can think of at the moment. :)
Oh, and I got married on Earth Day, so it’s a special day in more ways than one for me!
Melissa says
I have cut back on useless trips in the car. I try to plan everything out so I can tackle appointments and errands in one trip.
I recycle and have switched over to many earth and people friendly cleaning products.
The one thing I’m so tired of is all the plastic bags from grocery shopping. I try to ask for paper but that is wasteful too. So having a chance to win a cute bag would be awesome.
Thanks!

A long time recycling fanatic, I convert anyone to recycling (I am that obnoxious.) Long time members of the NRDC, the Sierra Club and other smaller groups. I wear the tree hugger label proudly. We had one kid as a choice to reduce our impact on the planet. We are avid hikers and you will see us picking up other people’s litter. Living in Italy helps reduce our footprint too, as we have only one car, we do not use a dryer, and we consume what is in season.
I will love the book, as I have a collection of good old Trader Joe’s bags to go to market. Thanks.
my melange says
Well, I have started food shopping with recyclable bags- no more plastic for me. I am switching to green cleaning products. I hand wash and line dry as much as possible. We are replacing all old lightbulbs little by little as the blow with the new compact flourescent bulbs and we have always recycled newpapers, mags, carboard and plastics ;) I feel like I am contributing….
my melange says
So sorry…
Book please ;)
noobcook says
I’ve always tried to be more green in the house – saves environment and $ at the same time! For example, I always have an extra bin in the kitchen for recyclable waste like cans, and the recycling workers come over to pick up the bag every fortnight. It amazes me why I don’t see more of my neighbourhood taking part since they make it so convenient!
Another way I help to consume less is by investing on energy-saving tools, and one example is my Tiger brand Thermal Cooker which I adore because it greatly reducing the cooking time (especially for long stews) and it keeps my food and soups warm (up to 8 hours!) without consuming energy.
book if I win, heh.
Happy Earth Day! =D

THANK YOU Sara! I can’t wait to receive my gift! ;)

Do you think it will be Earthday everywhere but Italy? They would probably want their very own Italyday, not getting the concept at all. xxx
